DRINK MORE WATER: The Importance of Staying Hydrated
We’ve always been told that the human body is made up of at least 70% water, so let's start with some hard data FACTS according to Google.
“Up to 60% of the human adult body is water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are watery: 31%.” - USGS.GOV
Let me ask you a question, have you ever talked to someone and notice that their lips were so dry that there was a white crust across their lips?
… Or extremely cracked, brittle, with blisters.
…. Or as they are talking saliva is accumulating in the corners of their mouth because their mouth was so dry… 😐🤭
➡️ These are all signs of dehydration.
Some other common signs of dehydration include dry skin, fatigue, sleepiness, increased thirst, and of course after a night of too much alcohol—headaches and dizziness.
Why is staying hydrated so important?
It's not just the body that needs water. Every major organ needs and thrives off of water.
Waking up first thing in the morning and drinking at least 8 ounces of water on an empty stomach stimulates the growth of red blood cells, creating more oxygenated blood which actually energizes your brain and helps you to feel more awake and alert.
I learned this haphazardly when I was driving Uber early mornings. I was trying to give up coffee so instead, I would just drink liters and liters of water. Honestly, I was shocked at how energized I would feel so early in the morning!
Drinking more water daily helps to stimulate peristaltic movement, in the digestive tract. Ultimately, the release of waste and toxins in the body assists in alleviating constipation, bloating, and inflammation.
How much water should you consume each day?
I highly recommend drinking one gallon of water per day. Start slowly by dividing your body weight in half, then drink that number in ounces of water.
Body Weight ÷ 2 = # fl. oz.
It’s that simple! For example, a person that weighs 150 lbs (which, divided in half is 75), will drink 75 ounces of water per day. Keep increasing this amount over time until you and get to 128 ounces (one gallon).
